Online Degrees and Courses in Economics

A good Economics degree program instructs students in application of principles and theories of science to the logical concepts of mathematics. Graduates of the program are well-versed in diverse fields: business, humanities, and the social sciences.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites for application to an economics degree vary from school to school. Typically, a high school education with certain grade percentages or a GED is required.

Bachelor’s degree program

The bachelor’s degree program in Economics takes four years to complete, and places emphasis on the humanities while educating students in analysis and mathematics. Core subjects include mathematics, literature, English, history, and other electives that students may choose from. Minor-scale case studies, debates, and other activities designed to develop quick analytical thinking are common.  The program also offers degree-specific classes include mathematical economics, economic theory, statistical economics, micro- and macroeconomics, and advanced mathematics.

Master’s degree program

The master’s degree program takes a more specialized approach to Economics, and the focus shifts to a more global perspective of the course. Students learn about global fiscal policies, international business trends, and how various corporations cope with globalization. Most colleges offering the program shift away from a traditional classroom setting and turn to a more closely guided educational approach. Students work closely with a faculty member on research work, case studies, and thesis development, as well as other projects related to the program. It takes two to three years to complete, depending on the student’s chosen concentration.

It is possible to graduate a Master of Economics, Master of Science in Economics, or a Master of Arts in Economics, depending on the career path that a student prefers. Others earn a Master of Business Administration, with a major in Economics, and the combination widens the range of possible employment opportunities.

Doctor’s degree program

Earning a doctor’s degree in Economics will vastly exercise a student’s research and analytical skills. The program is typically a preparation for employment in the academe or government. Students are exposed to specific concentrations, since by this time, they have already decided on an area of interest. Concentrations include regional economics, econometrics, advanced microeconomic theory, monetary theory and experimental economics.

Possible career paths

There are several job opportunities for graduates of an Economics program, although better opportunities exist for graduates who have pursued further studies in the course.

Companies hire microeconomists to study the supply-and-demand trends of their operations, as well as analyze the data they gather from the study. Microeconomists are crucial in helping companies maximize their profits and keep their target demographic responsive.

Organizational economists work with private companies and government agencies by studying the dynamics of their finances in relation to external market forces.

Macroeconomists are often tapped by private corporations to analyze and compare present and past consumer trends. They forecast large-scale economic drifts, productivity, inflation, and employment schemes.

Graduates with a passion for writing may enter into business journalism, where professionals monitor the latest fiscal movements and make the information palatable to the consumer public. They can write for a mainstream newspaper (i.e. Wall Street Journal), become well-respected columnists or branch into broadcasting.

Other lucrative jobs are legislative assistant, econometrician, labor economist, and public financial economist.
