Accounting Degree Programs

Program Overview

A degree in accounting provides an edge over a million other accountants in the country looking for employment. Depending on your choice of job, there are universities that offer accounting programs that will help you earn a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctor’s degree.

Prerequisites

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) requires universities that offer accounting degree programs to stipulate certain prerequisites for applicants. Standard procedure involves a CPA examination upon application to a college that offers accounting courses. This is a computerized test that is offered quarterly in testing centers across the country. Although prerequisites may vary among schools, students should have completed minimum education requirements or reach certain grade percentages to qualify for eligibility in the course. In addition, applicants should possess the critical thinking and analytic skills necessary in tackling multifaceted business and accounting issues.

Bachelor’s Degree Program

It takes four years to earn a bachelor’s degree in accounting, usually holding a minimum of 120 credit hours. Generally, accounting degrees have 54 to 60 hours of accounting majors classes, but some of these credits (usually 18 to 21) may be used on elective courses related to accounting or business. Students in the program must earn a grade not less than C- in each course.

It’s possible to get a bachelor’s degree that specializes in accounting under one of three concentrations, namely Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Administration. These concentrations are similar in that students are given a combination of business and accounting subjects, resulting in a well-rounded education that deals with essential facets of the business world.

Students under this program are taught basic accounting principles, and are encouraged to develop analysis, synthesis and evaluation skills for financial problem-solving. They are also taught federal taxation ethics, legalities, computer software programs for accounting, and even public speaking, which is necessary in the delivery of financial reports.

Master’s Degree Program

An accounting master’s program allows accounting graduates to concentrate on more specific fields of interest than in the broad-based bachelor’s program. Master’s degrees in cost, taxation and other professional specializations are available, allowing students to zero in on future career goals. The masters’ degree in accounting can be earned as Master of Science, Master of Arts and Master of Accountancy, with each designation bearing the same foundations in accounting subjects. Other specializations might entail more courses than others for the degree.

The least number of credits in a master’s degree is 30, 21 of which must be connected to studies in advanced accounting. More specialized master’s degrees need 64 credits for completion, with the added credits for extra subjects related to the specialization, examples of which are professional accounting and tax. The master’s program usually involves more theoretical coursework, enabling students to incorporate their insights regarding common accounting issues.

Doctors’ Degree Program

Students who have completed the master’s program in accounting may take further studies by earning a PhD. This usually serves as preparation for careers in research or teaching. The screening process may vary, although it usually entails review by the PhD committee, and endorsement of the applicants to the accounting faculty. A faculty member must express willingness to work with the applicant during the program, and offer guidance through co-authored research, advising, dissertation chairmanship as well as research and teaching assistantships.

Possible career paths

Graduates of the accounting degree programs will find lucrative positions as financial managers, tax advisors, internal auditors or financial consultants. Their critical thinking techniques and analytical skills will make them right at home dealing with managerial accounting, cost analysis, and even computer auditing and information systems.
