Associate Degree in Psychology
Earning an associate degree in psychology will prepare you for many different positions. Many students further their education after obtaining the degree and go onto study law or business. Psychology is the study of human behavior and the human mind. Obtaining the bachelors degree requires two more years of study.
The course study will teach you social interaction, abnormal behavior, adjustment, personality, emotion and motivation, perception, human development, sensory process and how to survey human behavior. You will learn about family and marriage therapy and the contemporary issues and theories in marriage.
An associate degree in psychology requires that you take Introduction to Psychology, Individual and Institutions Concepts and Experience, Psychology of Gender, Statistical methods in Psychology and Psychology of childhood and Adolescence.
You will also need to take Social Psychology, Current Topics in Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Psychology of Personality, and Directed Study in Psychology, Life Span Developmental Psychology and Behavior Neuroscience. You also must take Psychological Approaches to Minority Issues, Experimental psychology and Conceptual Introduction to Statistics.
The three other courses to take for this degree are Psychology of adulthood and Aging, Independent Reading in Religious Studies and Anthropology of Religion.
Psychology of Personality will teach you about psychoanalytic prospective, humanistic, dispositional, cognitive, biological and behavioral personalities. Abnormal Psychology will teach you about understanding and treating abnormal behavior, while you learn how to survey and research human development with Psychology of Childhood and Adolescence.
Psychology of Gender will teach you how to review theory and current gender research. The course focuses on male and female experiences as they relate to sexuality, aggression, relationships and achievements. Psychology of Adulthood and Aging teaches you about young adults through to old age, social and emotional development through the aging process and cognitive and biological development.
After earning the associate degree in psychology, you will understand psychology skills, patient care skills, patient communication skills, mental illness recognition skills and general psychology skills. You will also understand human relations skills, behavior and brain skills, clinical procedure skills, medical terminology and diagnostic skills.
Some of the psychology study programs include public health psychology, psychological counseling, psychological behavior, industrial and organization psychology, forensic psychology and clinical psychology.
Taking the specific psychology study programs may require additional courses in the specific field. Each college has different requirements for different fields of study. The course titles may vary, but all students must pass these specific core classes to obtain an associate degree in psychology.
Careers in Psychology
A career in psychology will prepare you to work in labor relations, social work and marketing. The psychology degree gives you some flexibility and is adaptable to any position in the workforce. You could find a job as a administrator, executive or a manager. Other job markets for someone with a degree in psychology include financial specialists, physician assistants, therapists, pharmacists and register nurses. These positions would require additional courses in the related field. However, the ability to work in a treatment or counseling field can be achieved with the associate degree.

Associate of Science in Psychology
The Associate of Science Degree in Psychology is a study of the methods and findings of contemporary psychology. This program includes a survey of human behavior, sensory process, human development, perception, learning, motivation and emotion, personality, adjustment, abnormal behavior, therapy and social interaction. Students will learn contemporary theories and issues in marriage and family therapy, as well as an overview of major classic and current Personality Theories. Students will take an eclectic, multicultural approach to abnormal behavior. This program will discuss counseling, the history of counseling and the theory behind its practice; exploring the multicultural, ethical, legal environments in which counselors operate; and examining the variety of skills today's counselors are expected to exhibit. Students must meet the following course requirements: 6 Core Courses, 10 General Education Courses, and 4 General Elective Courses, for a total of 60 semester units of credit.
