Associate Degree in Medical/Health Information
The associate degree in medical/health information prepares the student to work in the healthcare environment as a medical records technician, medical coding specialist or other medical information fields.
After completing the associate degree, the student will be able to understand the healthcare systems and how the guideline for HIPAA plays a role in medical coding. They will also learn to understand medical terminology and common abbreviations that are used in the healthcare field. The courses teach the student to understand how the administration functions work in the healthcare industry. A student will be able to explain the functions and roles of the different healthcare environments and facilities.
Required course needed for completing the associate degree in medical information are Written Communications, English Composition, Computer Software Applications in Healthcare, Introduction to Health Information management and healthcare Delivery Systems. Other course are Introduction to Sociology, Introduction to Psychology, Anatomy and Physiology I, Pathophysiology and Pharmacotherapy.
Other classes are Medical Terminology, Basic Diagnosis Coding System, Basic Procedure Coding System, Reimbursement Methodologies, Medical Assisting and Professional Practice.
Medical Assisting gives you the knowledge about procedures, processes and concepts of billing cycles. You learn how a medical office works and how payments are recorded. Anatomy and Physiology I introduces you to tissue and cell structures. You learn about all the major systems of the body including the reproductive system, urinary, digestive, respiratory, lymphatic, cardiovascular, endocrine, sensory, muscular nervous and skeletal systems works and the appropriate terminology.
Pathophysiology teaches you about the diseases affecting the body and what the treatments, diagnosis and causes are for each disease. Pharmacotherapy gives you an understanding of drugs. You learn how they are distributed and absorbed into the body. Professional Practice teaches you about the different coding practices of healthcare facilities including nursing homes, clinics and hospitals as well as physicians offices.
Computer Software Applications in healthcare provides the knowledge about software used in the medical profession. You will learn about coding, processing and inputting medical data. You will learn about the computerized systems used for medical information and how it is distributed to other facilities. Healthcare Delivery Systems details information relating to different healthcare systems and regulatory, financing and organization of the concepts in healthcare.
