Associate Degree in Liberal Arts
After earning a degree in liberal arts, you will be prepared for career in many different fields. The liberal arts degree is the foundation for furthering your education in other areas.
The degree concentrates on reading and writing. After earning this specific degree, you can look for a career in the marketing and advertising industries.
You will learn the proper analytical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, writing skills and communications skills needed to find gainful employment.
The courses required for an associate degree in liberal arts are College Composition I, College Composition II, College Algebra, Humanities, Statistics and Principles of Public Speaking. You will also take to a foreign language course and a health and fitness approved course. Other courses needed are Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Sociology, Economics, some courses related to Natural Science.
In Composition I, student will read speeches, memoirs, interviews and essays and then write self-reflections, arguments, rhetorical analyses and autoethnographies of what they have read. In Composition II, the student will study audience responses, shape textual meanings, metaphors, figurative language, and dialogue and narrative responses. Most composition courses require the student to write a short essay to be accepted into the class, but this can vary from college to college.
Principles of Public Speaking will prepare the student for developing the skills needed to become a responsible and successful member of civic society. You will develop a personal style of speaking in different situations. The course will teach you effective principles of presentation practices. The course will also show you how to apply an understanding to situations and events in your own life. It will also teach you the concepts of speaking in alternative ways.
The foreign language course is your choice and if you have taken two years in high school, you can substitute another advance language course for the credits.
Careers in Liberal Arts
After obtaining your degree in liberal arts, you can look for work as an advertising manager, editor, technical writer and a copywriter. The job market for liberal arts graduates is growing and is expected to continue growing in the future years. After obtaining an associate degree in liberal arts, you could become an assistant art director, payroll analyst, publications editorial assistant and a communications manager.
There are many open fields for someone with the liberal arts degree. Most colleges have advisors that can help you find different areas of work that is available for someone with this type of degree.
