Associate Degree in Human Services
The associate degree in human services teaches students how to assist any human services workers including psychologists and social workers. The student could have a job in a child service agency, family agencies, correctional and mental health centers or halfway homes or group centers. Such jobs could include working with family aging and violence programs or drug and alcohol abuse programs.
Someone that takes the associate degree in human services has an interest for working and helping people. You will need to be understanding and patient to work in this particular field. You need to have a strong sense of responsibility, advocacy skills, communications skills and strong interpersonal skills.
If you work in the field of Addiction, you will understand substance abuse and what causes it as well as the treatments and prevention strategies needed to help people. It is possible to work in public or private sectors that specialize in any or all substance abuse.
The family service field allows you to work with children, adolescents and adults. You may work with these individuals in a group home or at a even a resident home. You could work in foster care, adoption or with single parents. Aging studies allow you to work with seniors through gerontology, which is the study of aging processes.
To earn the associate degree in human services, you must take English Composition and Literature I and II, Introduction to Human Services, Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Aging, Group Process for Human Services, Community Service, Chemical Dependency and Culture Competence for Human Service Workers.
You will also take Legal Concepts and Ethnic in Human Services, Oral Communications, Human Services Practicum, Child Abuse and Neglect and some elective course. These courses will teach you the competencies and knowledge needed to work as an entry-level human service worker.
Introduction to Human Services gives you an overview of human services as well as the services provided. The course emphasizes skills needed in a diverse situation, ethnics and community. The Child Abuse and Neglect course deals with psychological and socioeconomic factors in child abuse and neglect. You learn the legal aspects, prevention, and treatment of child abuse and neglect.
Chemical dependency teaches you the cycles and factors that contribute to addiction. You learn treatment considerations, addiction prevention, dependency dynamics and reasons for abuse. The student also studies legislation that pertains to addiction.
After you have completed and passed all of the required course, you will be ready to look for a career in human services.
Careers in Human Services
After earning your associate degree in human services, you could find work as a mental health specialist, eligibility specialist, resident counselor, outreach worker, case management aide or a social service technician. The job market outlook for someone with this type of degree is continuing to grow. There are more positions available than there are people to fill the positions.
