Online Associate Degree in Fashion
The associate degree in fashion prepares you for a rewarding career in design or merchandising. You can select the appropriate degree depending on the area of fashion that you wish to work in and study.
The associate degree in fashion design will teach you to develop the necessary skills needed to take design concepts and coordinate them with merchandising, marketing and manufacturing practices. This degree will include computer illustration, fashions trends both past and present, textiles, pattern drafting and industry sewing. The fashion merchandising degree will teach you the skills needed for retail and merchandising buying, management, visual presentation, promotion and coordinating fashions.
The required courses for the fashion design degree include basic Industry Sewing, Introduction to the Fashion Industry, Fashion Analysis and Clothing Selection, Textiles and History of Western World Fashion. You also take Fashion Illustration, Apparel Line Development, Pattern Making and Design, Advanced Pattern Making and Design, Computer Patternmaking, Collection design and Production and an Internship in Fashion.
The required courses for the fashion merchandising degree are Introduction to the Fashion Industry, Fashion Analysis and Clothing Selection, Textiles, History of Western World Fashion and Fashion Illustration. You also take Fashion Promotion, Visual Merchandising, Business Practices for fashion, Techniques of Management, Principles of marketing and Internship in Fashion.
Both of these degrees also require general study courses and each college that offers the fashion degrees outlines the general study courses needed to complete the associate degree.
The study of textiles is important so that you understand the different materials such as man made fibers and natural fibers. You learn about the different finishes and fabrication methods. History of Western World Fashion is the study of how fashion has evolved and how it is influenced by events that have happened in history. The important thing that you learn when taking this course is how the trends change and what influences certain trends.
Visual Merchandising teaches you about materials, lighting, equipment and other merchandising techniques. It teaches the practical applications for floor displays and window showcases. Every course teaches you something about fashion that is used in conjunction with everything else you are learning.
Careers in fashion design
After completing the associate degree in fashion, you will be prepared for a career as a fashion coordinator, window display set up, assistant to a fashion designer, merchandising for stores and even designing your own fashions. You could become a pattern maker for one of the well-known pattern companies or for designer. Each degree opens doors in many different areas of fashion and design.
