A religion degree program is a two to four-year course that engages students in the tradition of religions, as well as the role it plays in contemporary society. Despite being viewed as a vocational course of only two years’s study, certain schools offer degrees after four years in the program, with the option to concentrate on a specialization for postgraduate studies. There are varying college degrees available in religious studies, examples of which are Associate and Bachelor Degrees in Religion, and Bachelor of Arts in Theology for undergraduate programs, as well as several, more specific, postgraduate courses. A religion degree program may differ from school to school, with different theological viewpoints, depending on which religion the program fosters.
Prerequisites
Generally, a high school degree is required for application in a religion degree program. Schools offering religious studies may also list an entrance interview as a requirement, specifically to gauge mental and spiritual preparedness for the course. In any case, specific prerequisites may vary among institutions.
Areas of study
Standard fields of study in any religion degree program will include the analysis of symbolism in usually more than one religious text, depending on the chosen area of specialization. Emphasis is also placed on the role that religion plays in world architecture and arts, including moral systems and the part that religion has in great civilizations and present times. Classroom discussions and intellectual discourse are a staple in the program, however, religious studies also entails a certain degree of research. Advanced degrees in theology might require a thesis, or a similar capstone project.
Students of the program will be expected to engage in insightful sharing on subjects of religious philosophy and subsequent moral dilemmas. Is abortion ethically correct? Based on religious text, is racism morally excusable? The program fosters appreciation not only of religion in general, but of art, music, and literature, as much of the same cultural symbolism found in religious dynamic also exists in these areas. As the program advances, students will find that religious studies is not so much an examination of theological practices than it is an analysis of multiculturalism. Students are taught to think from a multicultural perspective, as well as to critique issues from all possible angles, at the same time maintain a fair and unbiased approach to dealing with world spirituality.
Possible career paths
One might expect to enter a theology-related field of employment with a degree of religion under his belt. A Bachelor’s Degree in Religion or Theology, though not the sole basis, will give one an edge if he wishes to enter into a leadership-oriented position in a church. But although entering pastorhood or a similar vocation is an option, it does not remain the only career path available. Graduates of the program can find jobs as historians, curators, counselors, or researchers, all for their critical thinking skills, research abilities and multifaceted analyzing skills. In addition, advancing their knowledge in higher studies can land them lucrative teaching positions as professors.
