The Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities is a two to four-year undergraduate program focusing on languages, art, music, religion, philosophy, and literature. Graduate studies in humanities usually require an additional two to four years of study. As part of the liberal arts, the course concentrates on the human experience, and is, thus, of a more qualitative nature. It provides students with a well-rounded education and a wide exposure to the diverse forms of art, focusing on a more in-depth understanding of culture and history from different periods.
It is also possible to attain an Associate’s Degree in Humanities, which is intended for students with broad interests: drama, literature, art, music, languages and philosophy of diverse cultures through varying periods of time. This degree serves as a preparation for those who wish to transfer to a bachelor’s degree program and qualifies students for entry-level work.
A Master’s Degree in Humanities will allow students to concentrate on a specialization of choice, such as in a more in-depth analysis of history in a particular country or region, and studies of themes in literature. A master’s dissertation is not always a requirement, though that can vary among institutions.
Earning a Doctoral Degree in Humanities allows you to qualify for teaching positions in most colleges and universities. It takes three to four years to finish, however the rewards in terms of postgraduate employment are more than satisfactory.
Areas of study
The Humanities program tackles various disciplines, including studies in writing, communications, design, music, and arts. The study of arts, which takes up a significant amount of workload, encompasses the performing arts, applied arts and design, film, and architecture, among many others. The humanities is a multifaceted study, and students are given the freedom to choose one specialization of interest to focus on. It’s important to note that not all schools recognize the same fields as part of arts and humanities, and some schools have additional degree programs that are not offered in other institutions.
Skills gained from the program
Because the humanities deals with human experience, one is expected to acquire a sense of awareness of one’s self and society, enabling students to deal with present societal problems, as well as give professional, realistic solutions. The knowledge of culture and history offer a better understanding, and passion, of and for one’s profession. Aside the technical knowledge in the liberal arts, the road to a humanities degree develops communication skills, research abilities, and critical thinking techniques. Although the curriculum varies depending on the specialization one chooses, the broad nature of the Humanities course ensures that students acquire an interdisciplinary education, that pushes them to adapt freely and creatively in any environment they find themselves in.
Career Paths
Possible career opportunities with a degree in humanities include jobs that heavily involve logic, communication, problem solving, writing and cultural exploration skills. The popular job of choice is teaching, and although it is satisfying work, it is not the only career path open to Humanities graduates. One may choose to pursue a career in journalism, public relations, or history, or take up further studies in law or medicine. More lucrative employment positions are offered for those with advanced studies in a particular field of interest, so a master’s or doctorate degree will definitely spice up your resume.
