General arts is the study of liberal arts and sciences and is sometimes referred to as "classical education studies", as it deals largely with the several liberal arts: Art, History, Math, Philosophy, Science, Literature and Language.
A General Arts degree program is a four-year, eight-semester interdisciplinary course, although some programs can run from one two three years. It offers an education in liberal arts, with a concentration in at least one discipline, as well as various requirements among a general array of courses.
The program is usually available for majoring in Economics, Geography, Mathematics, History, Sociology and English. Students are required to learn a second language, and are exposed to the scientific process and formal reasoning. Students are given the freedom to choose from a number of degree options, depending on one’s preference.
Most schools with a General Arts degree program offer higher level courses in Anthropology, English, Fine arts, Theatre, and Philosophy, although these may vary among curricula. The degree may be a terminal degree, or merely a stepping stone in pursuant to higher education in the field.
Prerequisites
Most institutions have varying requirements on enrollment in a general arts course; some schools stipulate the completion of Grade 12 English as a requirement, others demand a certain number of credits to enroll in the program. Standard requirements, however, include completion of high school or GED, with a C average. Applicants are usually asked to submit a portfolio of work (sketches designs, prose), depending on the specialization they wish to take.
Areas of study
The interdisciplinary nature of the general arts program allows students to choose a study of interest among many interesting choices. Studio art is one discipline that employs the use of materials and various media to create different forms of art, such as paintings, drawings, photographs and sculptures, as well as enhancing honing skills and the ability to critique art. A study in design art offers more technical subjects in interior and graphic design. On the other hand, training in liberal arts tackles in-depth knowledge and analysis of art history and the social sciences.
Although art theory is an essential part of the program, general arts involves the actual experience of art, outside the four walls of a classroom. Students are encouraged to visit museums and art galleries, or attend poetry readings at a local poetry club. Coursework involves studies of historical contexts in different art forms, as well as carefully structured modules in the broader subjects outside of one’s specialization.
Career Paths
Landing a job with a degree in General Arts can be quite satisfying, although the playing field can be quite competitive. There are better chances of finding employment after pursuing a higher level of study, such as a masters’ or doctorate degree, or combination with another course, such as business and management. Popular areas of employment include human relations and communications. Most degree holders of general arts can look forward to lucrative careers as curators, researchers, or professors in their chosen field.
